The Detective Division is responsible for the continued investigation of felony criminal cases and some of the more complex misdemeanor cases.

This Division is divided into six units.

The Domestic Violence Unit, is dedicated to domestic violence crimes.  Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, can be a single abusive event or a pattern of coercive behavior used as revenge or to control, punish, or intimidate an intimate partner.  Domestic violence can take many forms, including abuse that is verbal, physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, and/or financial.

The Persons Crimes Unit, is responsible for investigating crimes committed against people, including: homicide and death investigations, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping, child abuse, and weapon offenses.

The Property Crimes Unit, is responsible for investigating crimes committed against property, including: burglary, trespass, auto theft, criminal mischief, theft, arson, extortion, fraud, forgery and white collar/computer crime.

The Special Investigations Unit is for investigating gang related activity, narcotic and vice investigations as well as fugitive location and apprehension. SIU assists other units and divisions with large scale investigations. These may include pattern crimes, organized criminal activity, and any other types of specialized investigations deemed necessary by the public safety director.

The Property and Evidence Unit handles all property that is booked at the Longmont Police Department. This section is responsible for maintaining the integrity of evidence and works closely with officers, the municipal prosecutor, the district attorney's office, and municipal, county and district courts.

The School Resource Officers (SROs) are a service function of the Detectives. Its primary functions and responsibilities are:
• Safe schools – promoting a safe environment in school settings through crime and disorder prevention, reducing illegal drug and alcohol use, and encouraging responsible motor vehicle operation, all of which is accomplished through investigations, restorative justice, mediation and the enforcement of statutes, ordinances and school policies
• Education programs – promotion and coordination of safety and awareness programs for students and staff
• Prevention programs – school programs to enhance positive decision-making skills and deter substance use and abuse.
