Firefighter
The Longmont Public Safety, Fire Services Division, hires entry level and lateral level firefighters.
Minimum Requirements for Entry Level
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Current Colorado or National Registry EMT Basic Certification
- High school diploma or GED
Minimum Requirements for Lateral Level
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Current Colorado or National Registry EMT Basic Certification
- High school diploma or GED
- Have a minimum of 2 years full time firefighter experience with another agency and have graduated from an approved fire academy
- Current Firefighter II or higher Certification
Other Desirable Skills and CertificationsÂ
- Colorado or National Registry Paramedic Certification
- Bilingual Skills including Spanish
Hiring Process
Note: the order of the testing process is subject to change.
Combat Test: Variation on the Davis Combat test and is a pass/fail with a 10 minute time limit. Includes while wearing firefighting coat, helmet, and air pack with no mask; Ladder carry, ladder raise, charged 1 ¾ hose drag, extrication and medical bag carry through serpentine, hose tower climb carrying hose and tools, forcible entry sledge hammer sled, victim drag.
Conditional Offer: Offer is conditional upon passing the remainder of the process which includes a medical examination and extensive background check.
Those hired as Entry Level Firefighters will attend a 14-16 week Firefighter Academy before being assigned as Firefighter on a shift. The probationary period is one year. After the probationary year is complete along with all other requirements, Entry Level Firefighters are placed at Step 2 Firefighter grade.
Those hired as Lateral Entry Firefighters will be assigned as a Firefighter on shift as an additional member of a crew for such time until supervisors approve knowledge, skills and abilities as a Longmont Firefighter. The probationary period is one year. After the probationary year is complete along with all other requirements, Lateral Level Firefighters are placed at Step 4 Firefighter grade.
