Contractor Licensing – General
Anyone performing contracting work within the City of Longmont must hold a valid Longmont contractor license, as required by Longmont Municipal Code 16.48.030.
Homeowner
Homeowners may act as their own General Contractor and perform work without a contractor license only if all of the following conditions are met:
- The property is your primary residence at the time of permit submittal
- The property is not a rental and not intended for resale or flipping
Subcontractor Requirements for Homeowner Permits
If a homeowner pulls a permit, the following rules apply:
- Subcontractors performing HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or framing work must be licensed with the City of Longmont
- Electrical contractors must pull their own permits in accordance with State of Colorado requirements

How to Apply
The City of Longmont processes new contractor license applications and license renewals online through the Accela Citizen Access (ACA) Portal. You will need to log in using your portal account.
Due to recent software updates, you may need to reset your password when signing in.
New Contractor License Testing Requirements
The City of Longmont requires all contractors performing work within city limits to be licensed and tested.
The City of Longmont does not offer reciprocal licensing with other jurisdictions.
A license exam is required for the following contractor types:
- General Contractors (Class A, B, and C)
- Mechanical Contractors
We accept exam certificates from the International Code Council (ICC) based on:
- The currently adopted code, or
- One prior code cycle from the adopted code
Electricians and Plumbers must submit a current State of Colorado master’s license and contractor’s license.
Licensing exam or certification is not required to obtain specialty license. The applicant must submit a certificate of insurance.

How to Apply
The City of Longmont processes license renewals online through the Accela Citizen Access (ACA) Portal. You will need to log in using your portal account.
Licenses must be renewed yearly.
License Renewal Requirements
General and Mechanical contractors renewing a license must submit a quiz completion certificate once per code cycle as part of the renewal application.

• $2,000,000 general aggregate
• $2,000,000 products completed aggregate
Sec. 16.48.070. – Liability insurance requirements.
A.
Every contractor granted a license under the provisions of this Code shall be required to maintain general liability insurance of a minimum of not less than $1,000,000.00 combined single limit (CSL), $1,000,000.00 general aggregate and $1,000,000.00 products completed aggregate for Class D contractor licenses, and $1,000,000.00 CSL, $2,000,000.00 general aggregate, and $2,000,000.00 products completed aggregate for all other licenses.

Contractors shall be required to show proof of worker’s compensation insurance when applicable.
