Applying For Building Permits

To finish an existing basement, complete the following steps:

Step 1: Review the Basement Finish Guidelines document, below.

Step 2: Complete a Residential Remodel/Addition Application. Your application must include a full basement floor plan with dimensions and room labels (as outlined in the Basement Finish Guidelines). Your submitted documents will help us determine if your project is in compliance with building safety codes, zoning ordinances, and other applicable laws.

Step 3: Submit your documents. You may submit your completed application and basement floor plan by emailing them as PDF documents to building.inspection@longmontcolorado.gov or by dropping them off in person at the Development Services Center (385 Kimbark Street).

Step 4: Pay your permit fees and pick up your plans. Your plan reviewer will notify you via email with the cost of your permit fees once your plans are approved and are ready for pick up. You may pay your permit fees and pick up one set of approved plans at the Development Services Center (385 Kimbark Street). Inspections require an approved set of plans on site at the time of inspection.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

NOISE: Section 10.20.100 of the Longmont Municipal Code prohibits making unreasonable noise that would cause a person of ordinary sensitivities significant annoyance and irritation.

CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS & TRASH: Section 9.04.100 of the Longmont Municipal Code requires debris and trash be contained on the job site.

BEFORE YOU DIG: Always call the Utility Information Center.

SMOKE ALARMS: Smoke alarms are required to be hardwired and interconnected in new and existing bedrooms, halls, and on each level unless the removal of interior walls or ceiling finishes is required. In this case, battery-operated devices are acceptable.

CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS: Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside of each separate sleeping area within 15' of bedrooms and are required to be interconnected. Combination carbon monoxide/smoke detectors are permitted.
