Applying for Building Permits
To add or build a deck, complete the following steps:
Step 1: Complete the Decks & Porches Building Guide. Be sure to fill in the blanks on pages 7-8 to indicate the construction dimensions and materials that will be used.
Step 2: Provide 1 set of plot plans (site plans) showing the dimensions of your project or addition and its relationship to existing buildings or structures on the property with the distance to existing property lines drawn to scale. For your reference, here is an example of a plot plan. You can also search our historical records using your permit address for access to an existing plot plan, if available. Make sure to select Building Permits under the Search Type drop-down menu. Use an asterisk before and after your permit address for better search results (example: *385 Kimbark*).
Step 3: Complete a Residential Remodel/Addition Application. Your submitted documents will help us determine if your project is in compliance with building safety codes, zoning ordinances, and other applicable laws.
Step 4: Submit your documents. You may submit your completed application and deck plan by emailing them as PDF documents to building.inspection@longmontcolorado.gov or by dropping them off in person at the Development Services Center (385 Kimbark Street).
Step 5: Pay your permit fees and pick up your plans. Your plan reviewer will notify you via email with the cost of your permit fees once your plans are approved and are ready for pick up. You may pay your permit fees and pick up one set of approved plans at the Development Services Center (385 Kimbark Street). Inspections require an approved set of plans on site at the time of inspection.
