Careful Connections (Full Speed Ahead blog)
School is almost back in session. And as young minds prepare to learn, it’s a good time to remember some basic internet safety habits.
Now NextLight internet does give parents some help here. Our routers include ExperienceIQ, which includes the ability to set parental controls, screen-time limits for individual users and even a “bedtime” when Wifi to a particular device will shut off until morning. But it’s still important for kids to learn how to look both ways before crossing the virtual street.
So here are a few simple reminders to share with our younger NextLight fans: 
- Beware – Don’t Share: There are plenty of things about you that the Internet doesn’t need to know. Never share private information online such as your last name, your address, your password, or any information about your family. That information can be used to snoop on you, put you in danger, or even help someone pretend to be you online so they can cause trouble.
- Click With Care: Sometimes messages or websites may pop up on your computer screen that you didn’t expect, telling you to click a link to win a prize or do something cool. Don’t ever click those links! They may infect your computer with a virus, or trick you into revealing private information. Remember, you didn’t ask to see those messages – you don’t know what’s really there!
- Don’t Download: Some websites may ask you to add something to your computer, also known as “downloading” or “installing” it. Never download or install anything without your parents’ permission. Just like with unknown links, you could end up downloading something dangerous if you’re not careful.
- When You’re Not Sure, Find a Grownup: If you ever have questions about anything you see online – whether it’s something you don’t understand or something that seems wrong or even scary – ask a parent or teacher. You don’t have to figure this out on your own!
