November 6, 202 – Construction at the northwest corners of Atwood Street and 4th and 6th Avenues is expected begin Thursday, Nov. 12, as part of the City of Longmont’s Quiet Zones project. Work is anticipated to take approximately one week and will require temporary traffic changes on southbound Atwood Street between 4th and 5th Avenues and 6th and Longs Peak Avenues. The block between 5th and 6th Avenues will remain open.

Crews are expected to work from 7 am to 5 pm daily, including the weekend of Nov. 14–15, if needed. Traffic restrictions will remain in place 24 hours a day during construction. The schedule is subject to change based on weather and coordination with BNSF Railway.

Traffic Impacts

Atwood Street Between 4th and 5th Avenues

  • The southbound lane on the west side of the railroad tracks will temporarily change to two-way traffic for local access only.
  • Residents on the west side of Atwood Street must enter and exit from 5th Avenue with the assistance of flaggers. Access to 4th Avenue will not be available.
  • The northbound lane on the east side of the railroad tracks will remain one-way, with no changes to traffic or property access.
  • No on-street parking will be allowed on the west side of Atwood Street.
  • The northwest corner sidewalks and curb ramps at 4th Avenue will be closed. Pedestrians and bicyclists must use 3rd or 5th Avenues to cross the tracks.

Atwood Street Between 6th and Longs Peak Avenues

  • Southbound Atwood Street will be closed to all traffic.
  • Northbound Atwood Street will remain open.
  • Drivers should use Collyer Street or Baker Street as alternate routes.
  • No on-street parking will be allowed on the west side of Atwood Street.
  • The northwest corner sidewalks and curb ramps at 6th Avenue will be closed. Pedestrians and bicyclists must use 5th or Longs Peak Avenues to cross the tracks.

Additional traffic changes may occur in December, including short-term full closures of 4th and 6th Avenues across the railroad tracks and the permanent closure of the 5th Avenue crossing at Atwood Street. The City will provide advance notice before these closures.
