Construction Begins Aug. 31 on Group 2 Railroad Quiet Zone Improvements

August 25, 2026 – The City of Longmont will begin construction on the second group of railroad crossings in the Railroad Crossing Safety Improvements (Quiet Zones) Project beginning Monday, Aug. 31. Group 2 includes crossings at 4th Avenue, 5th Avenue, 6th Avenue, 21st Avenue and Terry Street.

 

Construction will begin at the 4th Avenue/Atwood Street crossing, followed by the 6th Avenue/Atwood Street crossing after Labor Day. The 5th Avenue crossing will remain open during construction at 4th and 6th Avenues and will permanently close later this fall. Construction at 21st Avenue and Terry Street will begin later this year, with additional information provided before work begins at those locations.

 

Note: Trains will remain active on the railroad tracks throughout construction.

4th Avenue/Atwood Street

Construction at 4th Avenue is expected to begin Aug. 31 and continue through early October.

 

    • One lane in each direction will remain open on 4th Avenue.
    • A short-term full closure of the railroad crossing is expected in late September. Traffic will detour using 5th Avenue.
    • Between 3rd and 4th Avenues, the existing one-way traffic pattern on Atwood Street will remain unchanged. Drivers will continue to use 3rd and 4th Avenues for access. Flaggers will be stationed at 4th Avenue to assist traffic through the construction area. Delays may be possible.
    • Between 4th and 5th Avenues, Atwood Street will temporarily change from one-way to two-way local access on both sides of the railroad tracks. Vehicles will enter and exit this block from 5th Avenue. Access will not be available from 4th Avenue.
    • No parking will be allowed on Atwood Street between 4th and 5th Avenues.
    • Sidewalks at the 4th Avenue railroad crossing will be closed. Pedestrians should use 5th Avenue or 3rd Avenue.

6th Avenue/Atwood Street

Construction at 6th Avenue is expected to begin Sept. 8 and continue through mid-October.

 

    • One lane in each direction will remain open on 6th Avenue.
    • A short-term full closure of the railroad crossing is expected in late September. Traffic will detour using Longs Peak Avenue.
    • Between 5th and 6th Avenues, Atwood Street will temporarily change from one-way to two-way local access on both sides of the railroad tracks. Vehicles will enter and exit this block from 5th Avenue. Access will not be available from 6th Avenue.
    • Between 6th and Longs Peak Avenues, Atwood Street will be closed.
    • No parking will be allowed on Atwood Street between 5th and Longs Peak Avenues.
    • Sidewalks at the 6th Avenue railroad crossing will be closed. Pedestrians should use Longs Peak Avenue or 5th Avenue.
    • Columbine Elementary School students who normally use the Atwood Street pick-up and drop-off area will use the existing drop-off area on 6th Avenue during construction. Other school access from Longs Peak Avenue and Baker Street will remain unchanged.

5th Avenue/Atwood Street

Construction at 5th Avenue will begin after the 4th and 6th Avenue crossings are complete.

 

    • The 5th Avenue crossing will remain open while construction is underway at 4th and 6th Avenues and will provide access to Atwood Street between the two construction areas.
    • When construction begins, the 5th Avenue railroad crossing will permanently close to vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. There will be no through traffic on 5th Avenue across the railroad tracks.
    • All other east-west traffic will use 4th Avenue or 6th Avenue.

 
Construction hours: Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5 pm, with some weekend work as needed.
 
Construction of the required safety improvements does not automatically establish a Quiet Zone. Once improvements are complete, the City will request designation from FRA. The 4th and 6th Avenue crossings are expected to become part of a Quiet Zone in summer 2027. Trains will stop routinely sounding their horns at the 5th Avenue crossing after it is permanently closed.
