Small Changes Indoors Can Save Big on Water
Small Changes Indoors Can Save Big on Water
When we think about saving water in Colorado, lawns and sprinkler systems often get the spotlight. However, some of the biggest water savings opportunities can be found inside your home. From fixing small leaks to upgrading everyday appliances, simple indoor actions can protect our water supply and lower your utility bills at the same time.
1. Fix Leaks
Fix a Leak Week is March 16-22, 2026, making it a perfect time to check for dripping faucets and running toilets, which waste more water than you might realize. A single a leaking toilet can easily add $50 to your water bill every month!
Quick steps you can take today:
- Check toilets for leaks by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank. After 15 minutes, if color appears in the bowl without flushing, there’s a leak. Replacing the flapper will usually solve the problem.
- Learn how to read your water meter, which has special symbols to indicate if you might have a leak. Watch our new Reading Your Water Meter video to learn what the symbols mean and how to check for continuous water flow.
2. Upgrade to Water-Efficient Fixtures and Appliances
Modern water-efficient products use significantly less water without sacrificing performance. Upgrading old fixtures can dramatically reduce indoor water use over time.
Consider upgrading to:
- WaterSense® certified toilets – Models that use 1.1 gallons of water per flush or less are eligible for a rebate from the City ranging from $60 – $90.
- High-efficiency washing machines – ENERGY STAR® certified machines use less water and energy, and are eligible for a $75 rebate from the City and $50 from Efficiency Works.
- Low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators – cut water use while maintaining strong pressure. Request a free Longmont Sustainable Home appointment to get a high-efficiency showerhead and faucet aerators installed at no charge.
- Efficient dishwashers – use four gallons or less per cycle. ENERGY STAR® certified models can qualify for a $25 rebate from the City.
3. Simple Habits Add Up
Small daily actions can make a big difference when practiced consistently:
- Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads. This saves energy too!
- Take shorter showers. A 5-minute shower is more than 7 gallons!
- Keep a pitcher of cold water in the fridge instead of running the tap to cool it.
