Construction Begins Oct. 8 at Terry Street and 1st Avenue Railroad Quiet Zones Improvements
October 5, 2026 – The City of Longmont will begin construction near the Terry Street and 1st Avenue railroad crossing on Thursday, Oct. 8, as part of the Railroad Crossing Safety Improvements (Quiet Zones) Project.
Crews will first construct a new access road connecting the north end of Terry Street to Coffman Street. The access road is expected to take approximately one week to complete. Once the new access road is open, the Terry Street railroad crossing will permanently close to vehicles and pedestrians.
Traffic and pedestrian impacts
-
- 1st Avenue will remain open throughout construction. For one day during the week of Oct. 12, the north lane of 1st Avenue will be closed. Flaggers will direct traffic in both directions through the south lane.
- Mobile home park access to 1st Avenue will remain open in both directions. During the one-day closure, residents will continue to be able to turn either east or west into the south lane of 1st Avenue with the assistance of flaggers.
- Businesses north of the railroad tracks will have a new access route. Once the new access road is complete, businesses and local traffic will use Coffman Street to enter and exit Terry Street.
- The Terry Street railroad crossing will be permanently closed to vehicles and pedestrians. The closure is expected to happen during the week of Oct. 12, after the new access road is opened.
- Pedestrians will need to use an alternate route. There is currently no pedestrian access on 1st Avenue between the S. Pratt Parkway bridge and Main Street. Pedestrians should use the S. Pratt Parkway sidewalk to Boston Avenue to travel east and west.
Construction dates are approximate and may change due to weather, coordination with BNSF or unexpected construction conditions.
When Will Train Horns Stop at Terry Street and 1st Avenue?
Closing the Terry Street railroad crossing will eliminate the need for trains to sound their horns at the crossing. However, trains will continue to sound their horns until the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) updates its records and schedules. Train horns are expected to stop sounding at Terry Street in early 2027.
