The SCOPE (Supportive, Captivating, & Original Programs & Experiences) program, offered by Longmont Recreation and Culture, encourages individuals of all abilities to take part in recreational activities. It aims to provide inclusive opportunities that promote fun, engagement, and personal growth through a variety of accessible and enjoyable experiences. View the SCOPE vision and mission statements.

Anyone interested in learning more about SCOPE is invited to the “Get the Scoop on SCOPE” ice cream social on Friday, May 2 from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Izaak Walton Clubhouse (18 S. Sunset Street, Longmont). While the event is free, registration is required. Learn more here or register below.
Designed for everyone to participate in and enjoy this lifelong leisure activity. All abilities are welcome. Each bowler will be participating at his/her own pace. An additional fee of $2 will be collected from each bowler per week for Centennial Lanes.
Focused on teaching basketball fundamentals like dribbling, shooting, and passing. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics competition. Players of all skill levels are welcome to join and improve their game.
Parents or caregivers assist athletes in the water, helping them develop swimming skills, improve strength, and build confidence. All ability levels are welcome to experience the freedom and joy of swimming. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics competition.
Participants have the opportunity to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of water, improve their swimming skills, and enhance overall fitness. Athletes should be proficient at one of the four competitive strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, or freestyle. Athletes must be able to swim in deep water. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics competition.
Our track and field program provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in a variety of events, including running, jumping, and throwing, in an inclusive and supportive environment. With modified equipment and personalized assistance, athletes of all skill levels can develop their abilities, improve fitness, and experience the excitement of competition. Whether for personal achievement or to prepare for Special Olympics events, this program fosters teamwork, physical fitness, and confidence, while encouraging participants to reach their full potential.
Bocce ball is an accessible game that encourages social interaction and promotes physical activity in a relaxed, enjoyable setting. All ability levels are welcome to join and experience the joy of playing bocce ball with SCOPE. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics competition.
Whether you’re new to the sport or an experienced player, this program provides the chance to develop skills, improve coordination, and build confidence on the course. With personalized support, participants of all abilities can engage in golf at their own pace, enjoying the mental and physical benefits of the game while fostering social interaction and teamwork. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics competition.
The Softball for All program is designed to offer individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience the enjoyment of softball in an accessible and encouraging environment. Athletes of all abilities can participate in skill-building activities like hitting, throwing, and fielding. The program emphasizes individual growth, teamwork, and fitness, ensuring that everyone can engage in the sport at their own pace. With a focus on inclusion and support, Softball for All with SCOPE is a place where every participant can enjoy the thrill of the game and build lasting friendships.
Unified Softball brings together individuals with and without disabilities to play on the same team, promoting inclusion, teamwork, and mutual respect. Players of all abilities participate side-by-side, developing skills in hitting, fielding, and teamwork while fostering positive relationships both on and off the field. This program encourages social interaction, builds physical fitness, and creates an opportunity for athletes to showcase their abilities in a supportive, fun environment. Teams will have the opportunity to compete in Special Olympics competition.

These programs focus on using recreation as a tool for therapy, helping participants build skills, improve mobility, and increase self-confidence in a fun, inclusive environment.
Community outings with SCOPE give people the chance to explore local events and places while having fun and making friends. These outings help participants build confidence and try new things, like visiting museums, going to sports events, or taking walks in nature.
SCOPE parties are fun events where people of all abilities can come together to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. These parties include music, games, and activities that everyone can enjoy. Whether it’s a holiday party or a special event, SCOPE parties create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where everyone can have fun and feel included.
SCOPE Arts & Crafts offers creative activities where individuals of all abilities can explore their artistic side. These sessions provide a fun and relaxed environment for participants to create art through painting, drawing, crafting, and other hands-on activities. The goal is to encourage self-expression, build new skills, and promote relaxation and focus. SCOPE Arts & Crafts helps individuals feel proud of their creations while enjoying a sense of accomplishment and connection with others.
Movie Night provides a chance to unwind, share laughs, and enjoy a great film, all while feeling part of the community. Snacks and a comfortable setting make it a perfect way to spend time with others and have fun.
Drumming is a universal activity that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age, origin, talent, or ability. It is all-inclusive and unites us with one common thread – The Love of The Beat!
These classes are designed to provide an hour of stress-free interactive drumming. It’s fun and easy. Basic strikes, three-part rhythms, and a pinch of drum circle activities will be facilitated by instructor Nancy Brauhn-Curnes.
Drumming can provide many benefits including increased focus, memory, and the reduction of tension, anxiety, and stress. Most importantly, it’s just plain fun! No experience or musical background is required. Drums and percussion instruments are provided.
SCOPE Adaptive Line Dance makes dance accessible for everyone! No prior dance experience is required, and the class offers inclusive movement options for both standing and seated participants. Led by the energetic Two Left Boots, this class combines easy-to-follow line dance steps with lively music, creating a fun and supportive environment for all. Whether you’re looking to improve coordination, get some exercise, or simply have a great time, Adaptive Line Dance is a fantastic way to stay active, socialize, and enjoy the joy of dance. Come out and join the fun!
Sing for Joy is an uplifting and inclusive music group where participants come together to sing their favorite songs in a supportive, fun-filled environment. Led by Barbara Jo, this class is designed for all abilities, with no prior singing experience required—just a passion for music and having a good time! Participants will enjoy the opportunity to connect with others, express themselves, and feel the joy that singing brings, all while using bells and percussion instruments to add extra energy and excitement. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or just looking for a fun, musical experience, Sing for Joy promises a lively and rewarding time.
SCOPE Fitness is an inclusive, energetic workout designed to support individuals of all abilities. Led by a skilled instructor, this class focuses on enhancing strength, flexibility, and overall fitness in a welcoming environment. With modifications for all fitness levels, participants can enjoy exercises that cater to both standing and seated options. Whether you’re building endurance, improving balance, or just staying active, SCOPE Fitness offers a fun and motivating way to stay healthy and connect with others in a positive and supportive setting.
Therapeutic recreation is a type of therapy that uses fun and enjoyable activities to help people improve their health and well-being. The goal is to help people feel better physically, emotionally, and socially.
In therapeutic recreation, activities like sports, arts, games, and outdoor adventures are used to build skills, increase independence, and help people connect with others. It’s all about making sure the activities are fun, meaningful, and suited to each person’s needs.
A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is a trained professional who leads activities to help improve physical, emotional, and social well-being.
CTRS professionals are trained to understand recreation’s therapeutic benefits and ensure that activities are safe, enjoyable, and effective for the people they serve.
To become a CTRS, one must have a degree in therapeutic recreation or a related field, complete supervised practical experience, and pass a certification exam.
SCOPE programs rely on a great community of volunteers and sponsors to support individuals, teams, and programs. Help make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.
Background check is required for all volunteers 18 & older.

- Assist with set up and tear down
- Provide support to participants throughout the program (i.e., social engagement, assistance with tasks, etc.)
- One night per week for one hour
- One Saturday for Special Olympics Regional Tournaments
A Unified Partner is a player without disabilities who plays alongside SCOPE athletes.
This includes providing materials and/or financial support for a team or program.
- Accompany participants in community outings and provide support for an enjoyable experience.
- Help with cash handling, checking out, navigating the community, and more!
