Go beyond books with the Library’s collection of Bags & Kits
Through DVDs, CDs, books and more you can learn more about your favorite topic, travel to that place on your bucket list or give yourself a break — all with our take home bags!
Kids and teens have their own experiences and bags to explore. Take one home today and help them discover what having a new sibling feels like, growing into who they are, learning a new game, or exploring their favorite book characters.
All of these bags and kits are generously funded by the Friends of the Longmont Library
Check out a board game for family night in, friends get-together or date night.
- Games can be checked out for two weeks.
- Games are available only to Longmont Library card-holders and must be borrowed and returned from the Longmont Library. Please checkout and return games to the Reference Desk upstairs. Do NOT return in book drop.
- Games are not renewable, and each patron may only check out two games at a time.
- If a game is not returned after 60 days, the patron will be charged a replacement fee.

Checking out a Bag
- Experience, Destination, and Well-Being Bags check-out for two weeks, so you have plenty of time to plan and enjoy your bag.
- Bags are available only to Longmont Library card-holders and must be borrowed and returned from the Longmont Library.
- Bags are not renewable, and each patron may only check out one bag at a time.
- The bags are located on the 2nd floor  of the Library, on the last shelf containing newspapers. Check with anyone at the Reference Desk for assistance.

Have a book group or thinking about starting one? The Library has done all the legwork for you! Use our Books in a Bag program to jump start organizing your book group. These Books in a Bag are also called “book kits” in the Library catalog and by staff members.
The lowdown:
- Books in a Bag is a collection of about 80 titles: Books in a Bag Title List (Updated September 2024)
- Each Books in a Bag kit contains about 10 copies of the book, plus a notebook containing discussion questions, an author biography, a sign out sheet, and summaries of the other book kits in the collection.
- Books in a Bag check out for 6 weeks and can only be renewed once.
- Be sure to read our Books in a Bag Policy.

Visit State Parks for FREE with one of our Backpack Kits!
The Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado State Library teamed up to offer this unique experience package to library visitors statewide to encourage more people to take advantage of our beautiful state parks and all they have to offer.
Each Backpack Kit comes equipped with:
- A current year’s state park pass hangtag (hang on your car’s rearview mirror)

How to use them:Â
- Check out a “Check Out Colorado State Parks” Backpack Kit from the Library using your library card at the main circulation desk in the Library’s lobby.
- Use the pass to visit as many state parks as you’d like in one week.
- Use the materials in the kit to explore a state park and see what you can learn!
The lowdown:
- Kits are Lucky Day items, meaning they cannot be placed on hold and they check out for up to 7 days (1 week) at a time.
- No renewals are allowed.
- Replacement cost for a lost backpack kit is $80.
- You must have a Longmont Public Library card to check out these items.

Storytime Kits are ideal for preschoolers through elementary school children. Each bag features several books on a theme, a particular author, or a series, plus a stuffed animal friend or manipulative toy. These stories and toys are designed to be fun and engaging and are meant to facilitate read-alouds between grown-up and child or a group of friends.
- All Storytime Kits check-out for two weeks.
- Bags are not renewable, and each patron may only check out one bag at a time.
Available Kits
First Experience Bags are designed for preschoolers through young elementary school children facing first time experiences that can be scary or cause apprehension. These bags include books, videos, music, and toys to help ease the fear of the unknown around common childhood experiences. The materials in these bags come in many formats that are geared toward a full sensory experience that allow for conversation starters and imaginative play.
- All First Experience Bags check-out for two weeks.
- Bags are not renewable, and each patron may only check out one bag at a time.
Available Kits
Children’s Book Club Kits are designed to encourage children and their adults to begin their very own book groups! Each kit contains multiple copies of a single popular title, along with ideas for discussion and other materials to encourage conversations about the book. These kits are aimed at later elementary and junior readers.
- All Children’s Book Club Kits check-out for two weeks.
- Bags are not renewable, and each patron may only check out one bag at a time.

The materials in these bags come in many formats that are geared toward a full sensory experience that allow for conversation starters and imaginative play.
- All Junior Experience Bags check-out for two weeks.
- Bags are not renewable, and each patron may only check out one bag at a time.

Teen Book Club Kits are created for teens to facilitate a communal reading experience, whether as a formal book club, or just a group of friends. These kits contain multiple copies of a single popular title, along with materials to prompt discussion about the book.
- All Teen Book Kits check-out for two week.
- Bags are not renewable, and each patron may only check out one bag at a time.

Teen Experience Bags are designed middle school through high school aged teens facing experiences that can be stressful, scary or cause apprehension. They are also designed to provide an escape from the many obligations and assignments facing teens. These bags include books, videos, music, and games to help provide respite during turbulent times. The materials in these bags come in many formats that are geared towards answering questions and providing down-time enjoyment to teens.
- All Teen Experience Bags check-out for two weeks.
- Bags are not renewable, and each patron may only check out one bag at a time.
