Be Ready Longmont is an outreach program providing presentations to local community groups about how to be better prepared for disasters.

The City of Longmont Office of Emergency Management looks forward to speaking with your civic organization, workplace, neighbors and/or church group to ensure that you are prepared for an emergency. The presentation will provide residents with tools to become part of the solution when a disaster hits.

Please email or call (303)774-3793 to schedule a presentation with your group.

Three Steps You Can Take Right Now

  1. Sign up your mobile phone for reverse 911 notifications. Only landlines are registered automatically.
  2. Sign up for the Longmont Fire Police OEM on Facebook or follow Longmont PS on Twitter.
  3. Set a radio favorite to 1670 AM in your car for Longmont specific information.

Are You Prepared?
  • Do you know where to get information in an emergency?
  • What would you do if you were without utilities (power, water, and gas) for a few days?
  • Do you have enough food and water in your home if you were stuck there for a few days?
  • Do you have a plan to reach your family and friends in an emergency?
  • How would you heat or cool your house, or cook your food if  you have a utility disruption?

Now is the time to make an emergency plan

Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to think about the following situations and plan just in case. Consider the following when making a plan:

  • How will my family/household get emergency alerts and warnings?
  • How will my family/household get to safe locations for relevant emergencies?
  • How will my family/household get in touch if cell phone, internet, or landline does not work?
  • How will I let loved ones know that I am safe?
  • How will my family/household get to a meeting place after the emergency?

For sample plans and more insights, please look at this resource from FEMA.

Basic Disaster Supplies

FEMA recommends a basic emergency supply kit could include the following:

    • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
    • Food, at least a three day supply of non-perishable food.
    • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • First Aid kit
    • Whistle to signal for help
    • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
    • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
    • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities (turn off water, turn off natural gas, turn off electricity)
    • Manual can opener for food
    • Local maps
    • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

Don't forget to think about medications, glasses or special needs for infants, pets, or the elderly. Go here for more suggestions on building your disaster kit.
