Longmont Police Honor Guard 2024

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. National Police Week is established by a joint resolution of Congress to pay special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Each year our nation loses between 140-160 law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Each year the department pays tribute to those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice:

  • There are more than 720,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States. About 12 percent of those are female.
  • Since 1776, there have been 26,533 known line of duty deaths in America, more than 351 have been from Colorado.
  • In 2023, Colorado lost four officers to line of duty deaths.
  • 136 federal, state, county, municipal, military, tribal and campus officers died in the line of duty in 2023, a 39% decrease from the year before.
  • The deadliest day in law enforcement history was September 11, 2001, when 72 officers were killed while responding to the terrorist attacks on America.
  • More than 23,785 names are engraved on the wall of the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial
