Drug Prevention and Community Support

The Longmont Police Department is committed to fostering a safe and healthy community through proactive drug prevention, education, and support. Recognizing the early signs of drug or alcohol misuse and knowing how to offer help can make a significant difference.

Recognize Warning Signs of Substance Abuse

Behavior or physical changes may indicate substance use. Be alert for signs such as:

  • Unexplained mood swings or increased secrecy
  • Financial issues without clear cause
  • Declining performance at school or work
  • Noticeable changes in personal hygiene or appearance
  • New, questionable friendships or risky activities

For youth, signs may also include sudden drops in grades or reluctance to discuss new friends.

How to Approach a Loved One Who May Be Struggling

  • Plan what to say: Consider your message carefully.
  • Choose the right setting: Find a calm, private place to talk
  • Show your support: Reassure them that you care and want to help.
  • Provide resources: Offer information on counseling or hotlines and suggest accompanying them for support.

Understanding the Risks of Substance Use

Drug and alcohol misuse carries serious health and legal risks, particularly with illicit substances. In addition to legal consequences, misuse can increase the risk of disease and affect relationships, education and employment. Reminding loved ones of these risk can encourage them to seek support.
