Traffic Citations

Municipal courts issue traffic citations for violations of city ordinances, while county courts address violations of state traffic laws. The main difference lies in their jurisdiction: municipal courts are operated by cities and focus on local laws, while county courts are managed by counties and deal with state laws.

City of Longmont Municipal Summons and Complaint

Longmont Municipal Traffic Citation You have received a citation from a Longmont Police Officer that serves as both a summons and a complaint for Longmont Municipal Court (225 Kimbark Street, Longmont). It requires you to appear in court on the date, time, and place indicated on the front page. Appearing in Court

When you attend your court date, you will have the opportunity to speak with the prosecuting attorney to review your case or discuss a possible plea agreement. It is important to note that you are not obligated to engage in plea negotiations or accept a plea agreement. Any plea you choose to make must be done voluntarily, knowingly, and intelligently. You are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The prosecution (represented by the City of Longmont) must prove the charges against you beyond a reasonable doubt.

Penalty Assessment Instructions

TRAFFIC INFRACTIONS

Adults (18 years of age and older).

If you wish to plead “NOT GUILTY” to a traffic infraction and have a trial, you must appear in court on the date and time indicated on the front page of this summons and complaint. When you arrive in court on your scheduled date, you may speak with the prosecuting attorney to review your case or discuss a potential plea agreement. Accepting a plea agreement is not mandatory. Any plea you make must be done voluntarily, knowingly, and intelligently. You are presumed to be innocent. The prosecution (represented by the City of Longmont) is required to prove the charges against you beyond a reasonable doubt.

If you wish to plead “GUILTY” to a traffic infraction, you may be eligible to pay the fine and court costs without appearing in court. If your summons and complaint indicate a total to be paid, this amount is your total assessed fine. If there is no total to be paid listed (the total to be paid box is empty), please wait seven business days after receiving this summons and complaint. Then, call Longmont Municipal Court at 303-774-4804. If you are eligible, sign the Appearance, Plea of Guilty, and Waiver of Rights form below and either mail this copy or bring it along with your full payment to court (225 Kimbark Street, Longmont). The Longmont Municipal Court must receive your FULL payment by 5:00 p.m. on the day before your scheduled court date; otherwise, you will be required to appear in court on the date and time indicated on the front page of your summons and complaint. In Colorado, an emancipated minor is a minor whose parents have given up their right to a child’s care, custody, and earnings, and are no longer responsible for their support. This can happen automatically upon marriage or active military duty, through a court order if the minor is at least 16.5 years old, or by demonstrating complete self-sufficiency. For specific legal purposes, such as child support, emancipation generally occurs at age 19 unless specific conditions extend it.
