Volunteering Public Safety
Public Safety Volunteer
Police, Fire, OEM, Dispatch
Longmont Public Safety’s volunteer program began in 1986 and is now an integral part of the department and the community. The Safety and Justice Center currently has more than 100 volunteers working in different areas within the center. In 2021, our Safety and Justice Center volunteers, Police Explorers, Student Intern Officers, and Front Range Chaplains logged 11,890 volunteer hours. We appreciate our volunteers’ commitment and dedication to helping us serve the community of Longmont better and more efficiently.
Due to the sensitivity and confidential nature of the police department, the selection process for volunteers is designed to find those individuals whose honesty and integrity are of the highest standards. Volunteer applicants must meet several requirements in order to be considered for an available position. These requirements include a criminal history check, personal interview, and fingerprint check. Depending on the volunteer position, an integrity interview, background check, and polygraph may be required as well.
Our volunteer staff support program offers a wide variety of assignments. All volunteers are trained and supervised by a public safety staff member.
For additional information please email or call (303)651-8424.
The CVP Program allows members of the community to volunteer their time to assist the Longmont Police Services and the City of Longmont by providing support to law enforcement services. No law enforcement authority or power. No weapons of any kind while volunteering. CVP does carry pepper spray.

Work with police officers and citizens to address community issues. Assist other public safety divisions in appropriate assignments as approved. This currently includes relay and/or pick up of patrol requested items and patrol vehicles, fingerprinting for city staff and vendors, and support to special events and parades. CVP also provides call out support for long term road closures which could include directing traffic in a neighborhood.
Some CVP staff patrol the city in a radio-equipped vehicle or other approved forms of transportation; being the eyes and ears for the Public Safety Department and reporting incidents if needed. Volunteers patrolling always operate in teams of two for the safety of the volunteer. Patrolling is an optional assignment within CVP.
- Call-out team. To assist with special events.
- 24/7 on-call. To assist with Longmont Police Services and other agencies to protect and serve with integrity and professionalism. To assist in emergency activities and incidents which require additional staffing.
