From Waste to Watts (More Power to You blog)
When most Longmont residents see the iconic front-loader garbage trucks rumbling through town, they might assume that collecting trash from homes and businesses is the only service of the city’s Waste Services department.Â
But Waste Services is much more than trash collection, it’s a comprehensive system of services that help keep Longmont clean, sustainable and efficient including:Â
- Convenient curbside recycling and optional curbside compostingÂ
- Branch collection in the spring, leaf collection in the fall, and even places to leave your Christmas tree in December.Â

- A recycling drop-off site on Martin Street that takes not only single-stream recyclables like cardboard and aluminum, but also things like yard waste, Styrofoam, scrap metal, batteries and food scraps.Â
- The ability to arrange free pickup of harder-to-get-rid-of stuff like lumber, cabinetry, paints, or chemicals. (Find out more in our past blog on these services.)Â Â
- Monthly paper shredding events to help you safely get rid of old documents and recycle the paper.Â
- And even a convenient Waste Wizard app for your smartphone to help you remember when to put out your trash and recycling, any special events coming up and information on disposing specific items that may be more challenging, like an old mattress.Â
Similarly, Efficiency Works often gets seen as just energy advice and rebates. But there are many other services it offers across Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins and Estes Park to help reduce energy use, lower costs and contribute to a resilient, low-carbon future.Â

- Businesses can also get free facility assessments, connections to trusted service providers, and support for reducing operational expenses through efficiency improvements.Â
- Homes can get rebates and tips for adopting all-electric improvements, as well as home energy assessments and insulation upgrades, exclusive deals on ENERGY STAR® appliances and smart thermostats, and free energy advisor consultations.

Â
While Waste Services and Efficiency Works may seem worlds apart, they share a common goal: making life easier, cleaner and more sustainable for Longmont residents.Â
And just like those front-loaders, that makes for quite a collection.
Button Rock Preserve now open as of Saturday, December 20th. There is one area with a downed pole that remains closed.
