Temporary Water Use Permit

Overview

Contractors completing work within the city, typically at a fixed location such as development work, water or sewer line installation, site grading or other related work, must obtain a temporary water permit and follow the temporary construction meter checkout process.

In the past, the City of Longmont has issued permits for non-construction purposes, such as filling pools or other recreational uses. However, granting these temporary water permits or meter checkouts for non-construction work is no longer a City practice.

City Code

Using potable water from the City’s water distribution system for construction purposes requires a permit from the City. City potable water includes temporary water taps, temporary service lines, fire hydrants and other approved devices. The City permit includes provisions for payment of water used, installation of a meter, installation of an appropriate backflow prevention device, deposit and a daily rental charge. For temporary hydrant water, only City designated (“blue top”) fire hydrants may be used unless otherwise approved on the permit.

The City requires advance notice of a minimum of two working days prior to the issuance of any temporary water use permit.

At its sole discretion, the City may suspend temporary water use permits with one week’s notice.

Application for Temporary Water Use Permit

All temporary water use permits are issued through Water Utilities. Contact Water Utilities to request a permit.

Meter Pick Up

Once your application has been confirmed, you can pick up a temporary water use (fire hydrant) meter at Longmont Public Works (Field Operations), 375 Airport Road, Monday – Thursday, from 8 a.m. to noon by appointment only. Meters are not available on weekends or City holidays.

A $2000 deposit will be due at the time of pickup, plus a $35 administrative fee. Only payments by check are accepted; checks must be made out to City of Longmont.
